Trash compactors are ingenious machineries that allow you to reduce your garbage. Basically, what a trash compactor does is to compresses about 5 bags of garbage into one. With that being said, a trash compactor reduces our garbage five-fold, and every home should have one. As the case is with all household appliances, a trash compactor would need regular maintenance. In order for you to maintain a trash compactor, you'll need to know how a trash compactor works and how it reduces your waste exactly.

A trash compactor has a motor inside which operates the device, allowing it to press down on your garbage. When a home trash compactor unit is turned on, the motor begins to operate by lowering the ram or "the press" into the trash receptacle. These motors are capable of dishing two to five thousand pounds of force in compressing trash. The press will then compress the garbage down to size inside. Once it is done, the press will come back up after which, the trash compactor will bag the garbage.

It uses specialized compactor bags   which are different from the ordinary trash bags you can buy from stores. These compactor bags may come either in paper or plastic form. Paper compactor bags have a protective lining inside that keeps them from getting torn open, preventing liquid waste from seeping out. Plastic compactor bags on the other hand, have multiple plies making them very durable and reliable. Despite being more expensive the regular trash bags, compactor bags are more cost efficient since you will be using only a limited number of them. To put things simply, one compactor bag is the equivalent of five regular garbage bags. This alone will allow you to save money. Most kitchen trash compactors work exactly the same way, the only difference being the noise they make during the compacting process. Other models have added features such as odor elimination system and the like.

A trash compactor usually has a top-limit switch that shows you how garbage is inside. If the compactor reaches its limit, the motor will stop running automatically to signal you that there is too much garbage to compress. With most trash compactor models, it is advisable to leave about 6 inches of clearance in order for you to remove the bag easily and about 25 inches of clearance at the top so that the receptacle slides out effortlessly.

In installing a kitchen trash compactor, you may have to employ the services of an electrician in order to have it balanced and leveled. An electrician may also install a separate circuit breaker to avoid electrical overloading and short circuiting due to the trash compactor. Be mindful that a trash compactor may be bulky and you may have to remove some kitchen drawers and cabinets before having one installed.

If ever your trash compactor breaks down, you may call its manufacturer in order to have it repaired. If you wish to replace the motor or some of its parts, then you may go to a local store as they may have the parts you need to replace.
